We Just Won Two Great Taste Awards, And We're Still A Bit Stunned
Yesterday, Nourish and Soft Days™ both received the Great Taste Awards from the Guild of Fine Foods. Two blends, three stars, judged blind against thousands of other foods and drinks. Here's what happened, what the judges said, and why it means more to us than a shiny sticker on the jar.
What actually happened
Sadia and I received the incredible news yesterday that two of our blends, Nourish, our Gut Health Herbal Tea, and Soft Days, our Emotional Balance Herbal Tea, had each won a Great Taste Award from the Guild of Fine Foods. We've read certificates about four times now and it still doesn't feel entirely real.
For anyone who doesn't know our story, Welb didn't start with a business plan. It started because I was sourcing and blending herbs for Sadia, trying to find something that actually helped, when nothing on the shelf was doing the job properly. That's still the whole point of what we do. So having two blends recognised by one of the food industry's most respected panels, on taste alone, is a genuinely big deal to us.
The bit we keep coming back to: neither blend has a single drop of added flavouring in it. Every note the judges picked up on came from real, whole, organic herbs. That's the part we're proudest of.
What the Great Taste Awards are, and why they matter
If you're not familiar with them, the Great Taste Awards are run by the Guild of Fine Foods and are widely considered one of the most respected food and drink awards in the UK. Thousands of products are entered every year, from small producers like us right up to established household names, and every single one is judged the same way: blind.
That means the judging panel has no idea who made the product, what it costs, or how it's packaged. They don't see our label, our story, or our little studio in Surrey. All they get is the tea itself, brewed and tasted, and they score it purely on flavour. Products are awarded 1, 2 or 3 stars depending on how highly they score, and a 2-star award means the judges rated it as truly delicious. I still can't believe our organic functional teas are among the best 10% of products!
Which is exactly why this matters so much to us. It's not a popularity contest and it's not about branding. It's a panel of independent food and drink experts tasting our tea with no context at all, and deciding it's genuinely good.
Meet our two award winners
Here's a bit about each blend, and why we think they stood out to the judges.
Nourish
Gut Health Herbal Tea · 2-StarsOur gut health blend, built around organic spearmint, lemon balm, marshmallow root, nettle leaf, calendula, liquorice root and raspberry leaf. It's designed to be a gentle, daily tea rather than a one-off remedy, which is probably why the judges described it as "layered, with herbal notes that kept releasing right through a long, gentle finish".
Soft Days
Emotional Balance Herbal Tea · 1-StarOur emotional balance blend, formulated to support a settled, easeful mood through rose, chamomile and a handful of other calming botanicals. The judges picked out the rose particularly, calling it a "sophisticated flavour with a rose follow-on, and noted how well the different ingredients worked in harmony".
What the judges said, in their own words
We don't want to just tell you it went well, so here's exactly what the judging panel wrote about Nourish.

"On the palate it is quite a revelation, bright and rounded. The flavours are layered, and continue to release other herbal notes in a long gentle finish."
They also called it clean on the finish, said it left them refreshed, and noted that the infusion had clearly been put together well. On Soft Days, the panel focused on how the rose and the other botanicals came together.

"Those bright but rounded notes blend in the mouth to deliver a sophisticated flavour with a super rose follow-on that finishes the character well."
They also picked up on the pretty nature of the blossoms in the blend, and said all the different ingredients were working in harmony. Reading that back as the people who actually formulated these blends by hand, it's hard to put into words what that feels like.

When we started Welb, the goal was never just to make something that was good for people. We wanted blends people would actually look forward to drinking every day, without needing to hide the taste behind added flavourings. That's a much harder brief, and it's the one we set for ourselves from day one.
Winning two Great Taste Awards on that exact point, real herbs, properly dosed, tasting genuinely good, tells us that brief was worth sticking to.
